When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip-Hop

"Who's the man with the Master Plan from the land of Gracie, Grace? Herc! Herc!

Needless to say, we LOVED the Texas Bluebonnet Winner When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip-Hop! by Laban Hill w/illustrations by Theodore Taylor III. Here's our "Shout-out:" When the Beat was born takes us through the coming about of one of the first DJs nationally known, DJ Kool Herc! It's a phenomenal recount of the passionate zeal of one soul struck by the majesty of music! Find out more about DJ Kool Herc here:

Here's an interview with DJ Kool Herc explaining how he first established the merry-go-round for the turntables: Let's finish up with this "HILARIOUS" one handed windmill freeze! Lol! :) One baby-girl in the library owned the one-handed handstand! SHE IS MY ROLE-MODEL...FOR REAL! :)

Seriously, get your hands on this book! If you're a parent in your 30s like me, it's a trip of a trip down memory lane for all 80s/90s kids! Let's bust a move!

P.S. If you're feeling REAL BOLD, then here's the "how-to" on doing a Windmill:

I'll update you if any of my kids master it! Lol! :)

UPDATE: Instead of the windmill, one of my boys did the "spindletop!" Thank you to my wonderful son, for finding in his words, "The BEST hip-hop video EVER!!!
