Though this was a quick luncheon introduction. I will present a longer, in person session this summer July 24-27th in New Orleans at the 12th National Conference for African American Librarians! We'll have some hands-on activity and a deeper dive into the content. You can register here or reach out to me via email and we can discuss bringing this session to your campus!

I know I went missing for a couple of months, but the holidays swarmed me and I've had a lot of irons in the fire. First and foremost, I can now announce that I'm a 2023-24 Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellow!

Stay tuned for the month of May, when I can release the published unit I've worked on which focuses on my bittersweet love of ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE!

This month also marks BLACK EXCELLENCE MONTH, which ya girl's given her best to model. Another nugget of joy, I'm the Texas Library Association's Spotlight Member of the Month! In case the link ever breaks down, here are some pictures of my interview:

This post is like a GUMBO for educational resources! I have a little bit of everything embedded into this newsletter:

But I want to take a moment and discuss "Intellectual Humility." I was introduced to this via a post on X/Twitter:

Self-awareness that you may not know everything. It's worth the lesson to question everything you think you know to be true.

I found it pertinent to how "misinformation, disinformation and mal-information" interact and oppose intellectual humility. It's seems in this time of bombing, war, erasure and book bans, folks are running around like their ideas are transformative and their poo is potpurri!

Simply put, we ALL need to take a step back, listen with the intent to empathize, READ MORE and create constructive dialogue.

Please take a moment to read up on intellectual humanity and feel free to leave a comment, if you'd like to discuss with me.

You may remember that this past spring, I tested AI on #BlackHistoryMonth using ChatGPT: AI in Favor of Racist?

Now, 8 months later, I wanted to see what another AI resource, Google's Bard, would do with the prompt: Create a speech from a black woman's perspective on how book bans suppress the speech and freedoms of black people. include specific examples from the last 10 years. Here's the essay in its entirety, unaltered. Or you can just watch this video below:

Below are further details on the analysis/feedback that I've thought about since making the video. It's a view "behind the veil" for librarians of color:

I've endured more hatefulness as a librarian than I ever endured as an English teacher. One job cut my position "for budget reasons," during the pandemic, because I taught the book, The Hate U Give (Thomas, 2017), which that campus thought promoted anti-police behavior. Even when I moved to a new city, that hatefulness for a multi-degreed leader just couldn't be overcome. It seems as though some folks in society just can't take directives, advice, presentations or suggestions from a Black person in leadership. My third day on one campus, I was literally almost run over by a Caucasian woman pushing a cart, who never met me, and as I introduced myself, she kept pushing a cart furiously towards me. Had I not stopped the cart she pushed with my hands, looked her dead in her eyes and asked her "are you literally trying to run the new librarian over," she would have hurt me. Keeping my composure, I asked her name. Oh, then it was a whole different ball game because I immediately went to administration to inquire about this person. She went from "psycho to sweetie" in a blink of an eye, stating she didn't know I was the "new librarian," thinking I was a substitute (like that excused her ugliness). By the time it was all said and done, I knew then, even though I relocated from a diversely-rich city (hey, Houston), I was back in central Texas...what we (Black folks here) used to call it in college--I went to Baylor University in Waco, TX for undergraduate school--"klan territory," where racism is as apparent as tan lines. Research sundown towns in Texas, if you don't believe me.

What does that have to do with book bans? Only in America, will the "predominant race" turn around after centuries of oppression, violence, lynching and hangings, sexual assault and terrorism, THEN have the audacity to utter words like "don't make my child feel guilty that they're white," or "we should add a preemptive note saying that this book contains sexual assault [or other sensitivities]," and finally that Black folks "benefited from slavery." The entitlement. The privilege. The spoiled mindset that my child's innocence must be protected, when kids of color suffer the trauma of reading about our enslaved Ancestors then and NOW. As the assigned curriculum, mind you. To this day, I hate To Kill a Mockingbird, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer because it gave unofficial permission to white kids to hurl racist insults at the only Black girl in class. No one protected me or those like me, in the 19th/20th century then, and no one protects me against racist treatment now in 2023...but I do have a white chair handy, just in case. 😉

To bring us back to the idea of banning (because enslavement was a banning of citizenship and rights), slavery morphed after 1865 into other extensions of systemic hatred (gerrymandering, voter suppression, not honoring Black GI Bills for veterans, red-lining communities, denying us leadership roles/promotions). No one cared to shield our (Black kids) innocence because it plays into their manipulation of the minds via oppression, even at a young age. It's their kids that called me and millions of other Black kids, the n-word. I was 7 years old when it happened to me the 1st time. Black folks know this. Even though our "freedom" was a tactical maneuver by then President Lincoln to win the American Civil War, unexpectedly, our equality rose so quickly after Reconstruction, that Jim Crow, segregation and the repeal of Black Rights took place, enslaving us all over again.

"How dare those folks think they're equal to us?" New century, same old song. Dare I mention the Tulsa Massacre (1921) that most folks just learned about in the last few years nationally where an entire, successful Black community was burnt to the ground, without consequence and with threat of death upon mentioning it? Seneca Falls, NY (1863)? Rosewood, FL (1923)? Philadelphia, PA (1985)? Here's a map:

Fast forward to 2023, Black folks are again getting screwed: appealing affirmative action, censoring Black voices, appealing abortion and lynching Black Americans in the streets. Whether we look forward or backwards, hatefulness surrounds us. There's consistently a showing of cruelty towards us at the hands of the same old enemy: unchecked, empowered, white racists...who are presidents, doctors, CEOs, governors and colleagues. Whether we're doing our jobs, selling lemonade, sleeping in our homes, or trying to check out a book (Iowa School District Uses AI to Ban Books), there is ALWAYS some white person trying to "police" us. There's a reason why police and policy have the same root word. It's no different than these governors trying to ban books written by and for marginalized communities.

Even now, with the explosion of AI (artifical intelligence), Black folks are being erased and denied inclusion via AI, fired for speaking up about the embedded racism in AI, and denied the freedom to read about themselves in a book from the library. Want my further thoughts on the inequities for Black Americans regarding AI, then please read: The Obvious Miss, Straight-up Diss and Maleficent Missteps of AI Integration. The title is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-hop! 🤩

Yes, this is an unsual reflection on banned books week from me. Usually, I'm giving resources, encouraging participation and planning events. But this year, I had to get down to the core of banned books week as it relates to me. This blog holds me and my followers accountable. I'm sick and tired of being banned. It's a condition I've spent my entire life enduring in some shape, fashion or form. I don't need lessons of yesterday or centuries ago. I just need to keep trying to excel in this life in America. Inevitably, someone hateful, prejudiced and racist will cross my path. It's a matter of waiting for the other shoe to drop or as simple as apple pie, especially here in central Texas, where Austin simply IS NOT as progressive as Houston. It might get there one day, but it sure isn't today. So, I'll continue to teach what's its like to be banned: by book or by color. I've 45 years experience in both fields.

We've reached May! Here in Texas, we have less than a month left before it's SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER TIME!!!!🎶🎵

It's also Asian American Pacific Islander Month and on the 4th of May is Star Wars Day! Rest assured that this newsletter hits all the highlights and celebrations this month has in store. Most importantly, for those students following this blog, ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BACK BY MAY 12, 2023! You can come in the library to return them OR drop them off in the C-hallway book-drop. I kept the newsletter short, which in kid language is long still. But what can I say--I've a way with words! 😂 Enjoy!

I'm excited to share what's going on this month in the library. Yes, the newsletter below is a "call to action," but even more importantly, it's time to love your librarian! If People Magazine can celebrate our 2 AWESOME Texas Librarians (Yay, Carolyn and Becky!) making strides to keep students at the center of their book-choice selections for their own development and curiosities regarding their love of reading, then so can you! Meet all of the Texas Librarians you can this month at the Texas Library Association's Annual Conference in Austin, April 19-22, 2023. I'll be there interacting and uplifting as many of us as I can.💜

Within this newsletter you'll find all sorts of goodies from the wonders of AI (which I used to create this nifty, alter ego version of me ABOVE ☝🏾⏫☝🏾 ) to the actions you can take to speak-up about your LOVE for the library. Yes, it's a wee-bit long, but it's OUR LIBRARY MONTH, and everything is on the line in Texas this legislative session in regards to literacy, librarians and our love for libros!! Enjoy!

Happy Women's Herstory (not HIStory) Month! I've often discussed the "glows-n-grows" of being a woman, therefore, I will keep my thoughts brief. Every woman walking this earth, lived inside her grandmother, as women are born with all the eggs she'll ever release. Having said that, I ache that I never birthed a daughter to continue the tradition of holding my daughter/grand-daughter within my being to transfer any bit of extra love and support I could muster as a mother. Through miscarriages and unsurvivable births, I know the importance of the female body and the strength it takes to carry, birth and nourish life. Women and only women know that magnitude of humanity. Let us excel in equality, endurance and empathy. We're a profession of healers, nurturers and parents. Every bit of our essence is worth its weight in gold...and the world must reflect, uplift and value women. Period.

Enjoy this month's newsletter and treat the women in your life to a small, sweet miracle of love. She's worth it:

Quite honestly, if AI (Artificial Intelligence) proves to continue racism/prejudices/biases in favor of white supremacist ideology--as it presently demonstrates--I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT. I will use my platform to discuss the inequities--as I presently do--in hopes that improvements are made to represent all perspectivities with authenticity and relevance as it pertains to AI's successes and continuances. Black people have always been scholars, scientists and sage counsel for the world. AI needs to reflect that conviction.

Enslavement represents what was done to us, not our history.

All of the present hoopla discusses all the "amazing things" AI can do: colleges are in uproar about AI writing papers, entrepreneurs test out the ease of creating business plans, etc. To test out my theory, I asked ChatGPT to write a paper on Black History for #BHM. My gut believed it would present a "whitewashed" version of Black History worse than Floridian Governor DeSantis banning parts of Black History, but I needed evidence. (Shame on you College AP Board for buckling under his pressure.)

I took to Twitter to share my findings and open discussion on the discovery of how little regard ChatGPT gave to Black History. Begin w/slavery, discuss that Civil Rights were given, talk about 4 notatble Black Americans, and a brief conclusion, as though that's all of Black Americans' contribution to America? Denied the right to read, congregate or own anything, not included. Black Reconstruction, not included. Building of the majority of our federal buildings, colleges, churches, not included. First Black President, not included. Jim Crow and his lynching klan, not included. WHO BLACK PEOPLE WERE BEFORE ENSLAVEMENT, not included. (An aside: Check February's newsletter for resources on Black People before enslavement.) The only thing discussed was what racists did to us, and the lemonade we made out of starting from zero (no land, economic wealth or rights). When I tell you it provided some of the WORST "white-washing" possible, believe me.

This doesn't surprise me. What frustrates me the most is that AI will continue yt-supremacy b/c the input "engineers" are any nationality but Black. It's intentionally orchestrated. I asked it to write a paper on Black History: it BEGAN with slavery, included only Civil (1/?) pic.twitter.com/9FOOTj4HmJ
— AwakenLibrarian (@awakenlibrarian) February 24, 2023

Therefore, I do what I do best, TEACH. I created the following writing activity to conclude Black History Month, but more importantly to reflect on the importance of NOT CONTINUING RACISM in the world of artificial intelligence. Continuing racism via AI will definitely--at least from the Black perspective--indeed provide artifical AND fictional intelligence, again. Not that we need permission, but Black folks must tell our own story to get it right. The last thing we need are racist robots or a robotic mentality continuing hate crimes.🙄

(03/02/23) UPDATE: Thank you, Black Jesus! I kept digging and finally found something promising as it relates to AI in favor and advocacy for Black people. This is what ChatGPT could do with the content of their tech advancements. Simply put, this is how you can be INCLUSIVE in the world of AI. Nevertheless, I present AI Lewis Latimer! Here's a brief screen-cast of just a sample of the awesomeness that is Mr. Collier's work. He's trying to figure out who to spotlight first in his AI documentary. I had this EUREKA idea over the winter break: I want students to CHECK OUT THEIR DREAMS!

When I was younger, I dabbled in all sorts of things. I played the cello, played basketball, drew images, designed all sorts of stuff within the walls of my mind. So...I thought how can I attract those sparks of ingenuity with MY kids?!

Here's my answer: for the month of January, there will be an "80s Fashion Design" contest going on in the library. Here's a sign-up sheet that explains in details the rules. It's the same QR code for the sign-up form in the slideshow presentation. I am only available Tuesday-Thursday for design times during the last 90 minutes of the school day. You can choose your time on the sign-up sheet. As always students, you can email me any questions.

In the meantime, check out these new library books and enjoy Langston's DRIP...😎🧥

P.S. I don't own the music or rights to any Stranger Things images. I downloaded a free 20 second sample of the theme music for the series and ran it on a loop. Everything else, I purchased as a fan of the show. Just below is the article in its entirety. Thank you to the American Federation of Teachers' Union (AFT) for giving me a place to release this internal torture that is surviving a school shooting and the PTSD scars that never fade. I dedicate this article to all of the educators, students and surviving family members that unwillingly perished due to preventable gun violence. Replace "thoughts and prayers" with strict policies to prohibit "civilian access to military weapons." Until then, those words ring hollow because we can help ourselves out of this nightmare. Along with my article and within this same issue, are other perspectives and suggestions to finally end this senseless suffering as it relates to gun violence. I implore you to read every one. Thank you in advance.

¡Felíz Día de los Muertos! Today, we celebrate the lives of our Ancestors in my culture. I do it always, but especially today. On October 26, 2022, I lost my beloved Aunt Pearl. She loved to cook, laugh and dance. On the outside, she held it together. However, she also tried mightily to survive domestic violence [1.800.799.7233, Domestic Violence Hotline. Click here for shelter information in the state of TX]. So many of our households suffer due to that dirty secret. She's at peace and free. I will remember her always and tenderly in my heart. She taught me so much about cooking and devoured my homemade cheesecake every time she could. Here's the my tribute to her:

This was the 1st time, I allowed him to wear a scary costume AND give out candy. We decorated the bushes, changed the porchlight and purchased 25 lbs of candy...and not a single soul would approach him. He scared them all, grown folks, kiddos and teens. One parent argued he wasn't a kid. After 2 hrs, he came in and sobbed. He begrudgingly accepted that he was too scary. What say you, my friends?? Was he too scary?

Before it slips my mind, Happy Birthday, JJ. You're the best soulmate for me! You, your brother, and our connection breathes life into the worst of my days!

For those of us librarians in Texas, we've been ordered and CENSORED by the GOP party/Govenor of certain Texans to remove 850 books. Never mind the mindset of "putting kids first" and "diversity is the fabric of life," books that represent all Texans are being pulled from the shelves. But guess what? My hometown, the Bayou City of Houston, TX is on to these suckers.
